Excellence in Education

Consciousness-Based education unfolds the full creative potential and inner happiness of every student and teacher, eliminate stress, and enlivens total brain functioning. The key technologies of this program are the Transcendental Meditation and its advanced techniques.

Consciousness-Based education is non-sectarian, and is easily integrated into any public or private school without making extensive changes to the existing curriculum or schedule. When implemented fully within a school, not only do the individual teachers and students flourish; the entire school atmosphere becomes harmonious, happy, safe, and conducive to learning

Hundreds of scientific research studies and educational outcomes of more than 200 Consciousness-Based education schools throughout the world document the profound benefits of Consciousness-Based education for students, teachers, and administrators of all cultural and educational backgrounds.

The good news is that today any school can offer a practical, proven program that fulfills the highest aspirations of educators, parents, and students, simply by adding one period a day to the existing curriculum. This one addition will provide what has been lacking in education—new knowledge that is effective in solving the problems that plague our schools and society.

Our schools are entrusted with the responsibility to develop the most important natural resource of our nation—the intelligence and creativity of our youth. Consciousness-Based education enables any school to fulfill this responsibility by systematically developing the latent creativity and intelligence of students, so that irrespective of their educational or socio-economic background they can experience increasing success and fulfillment every day. This is accomplished through effective, proven technologies of consciousness, featuring the Transcendental Meditation program.

Maharishi University of Management was founded in 1971 by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi to fulfill the highest ideals of education. Foremost among these ideals is developing the full potential of consciousness in every student — to help students develop the ability to think and act in accord with the laws of nature and to live fulfilled and successful lives. This fulfills the long-sought goal of education: to produce fully developed individuals, citizens who can fulfill their own aspirations while promoting all good in society.

The University has pioneered a unique system of higher education, Consciousness-Based education, that systematically cultures students’ full creative intelligence, the basis of learning. Consciousness-Based education gives traditional academic study the foundation of complete knowledge of consciousness coupled with simple, natural, scientifically validated technologies for developing consciousness.

These technologies are the Transcendental Meditation and TM-Sidhi programs, including Yogic Flying. This integrated approach develops students’ ability to manage their lives successfully, to grow steadily in health, happiness, and wisdom, and to achieve professional success and personal fulfillment.

The University is accredited by The Higher Learning Commission and is a member of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, the oldest accrediting agency in the USA. The University offers degree programs in business, education, communications, mathematical science, literature, physiology & health, Vedic Science and sustainable living.

MUM is recognized by the US Department of Education and the Council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA). The University’s business programs (B.A., MBA, and Ph.D.) are accredited by the International Assembly for Collegiate Business Education (IACBE)

The University is located on a 272 acre campus in Fairfield, Iowa, USA. Total enrollment for 2009/2010 was 1,231, including 276 undergraduate and 955 graduate students. From this total, 516 were at the Fairfield, Iowa campus and the rest were enrolled in distance education or in MUM’s partner institution in China. These students hailed from 75 countries.

The University’s Institute for Natural Medicine and Prevention (INMP) (formerly the Center for Natural Medicine and Prevention) collaborates with a consortium of medical centers including the University of Iowa College of Medicine in Iowa City, Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta, Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science and Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.

The Institute for Natural Medicine and Prevention trains future researchers that includes graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and physicians, in the area of natural approaches to medicine. In the past decade, Institute director Robert Schneider. MD and national collaborators have received grants totaling over $10.5 million for research on prevention-oriented natural medicine.

The University has received more than $20 million in funding from different branches of the National Institutes of Health. The University’s Department of Physiology and the Institute for Natural Medicine and Prevention received $8 million from the NIH National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) to establish the first research center in the U.S. specializing in natural preventive medicine for minorities. Maharishi School is an independent, non-denominational, college preparatory school located in Fairfield, Iowa, USA. The School was founded in 1974, received state accreditation in 1986 and began single-gender classes in 1989. It is located on a 10 acre campus within the main campus of the Maharishi University of Management.

The School has no entrance exams, with open enrollment from a diversity of backgrounds. Yet the student body is brimming with creative intelligence. Published research reports that each year students grow in intelligence, creativity, and academic performance, as well as in qualities of leadership and citizenship.

Consciousness-Based Education, used to achieve this at Maharishi School–and in hundreds of Consciousness-Based Education schools around the world—incorporates the Transcendental Meditation (TM) technique practiced for a few minutes twice a day as part of the academic routine. TM systematically enlivens the coherent functioning of the brain and expands the container of knowledge, the student’s own consciousness, the basis for success in life. .

Transcendental Meditation is like a laboratory that enhances every other class. In addition to that experience, Consciousness-Based Education includes a special subject called the Science of Creative Intelligence, the study of laws of nature that structure our world and of the development of consciousness to its highest state–enlightenment: inner development for outer success.

Maharishi School students have received numerous awards in state, national and international competitions for science, the arts, creativity and athletics.

In the past few years the School has graduated ten times the national average of National Merit Scholar Finalists, seen 95% of graduates accepted at four-year colleges, and had grades 10–12 consistently score in the top 1% of the nation on standardized tests of educational development.

In the creative problem-solving competitions Odyssey of the Mind and Destination ImagiNation, Maharishi School students have won more state championships than any other school in Iowa history. They have also won the international Global Finals three times, and garnered more top-ten finishes than any other school in the world.

In 2011, Maharishi School students received 40 of the 205 awards given at the Eastern Iowa Science and Engineering Fair, had eight finishes in the top three at the State Science and Technology Fair of Iowa, won a gold and bronze medal at the International SWEEEP Olympiad, fourth place at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair and won the state championship at the U.S. Stockholm Junior Water Prize National Competition.

Students have won more of the top awards in group speech competitions than any other school in state history, and since they started competing in 1988, they have won 16 boys’ state tennis championships—far more than any other school in that time period. Indeed, since the first graduating class in 1983, more state championship ribbons have been awarded than there are School alumni. LEARN MORE

The Maharishi School is a non-academically selective free school in Lathom, Lancashire, UK. The school utilizes Consciousness-based Education: Its students learn the Transcendental Meditation technique (TM) and practice it as part of the curriculum for three 10-minute sessions during the school day, which enables the students to be calmer, more focused and relaxed and improves their ability to learn.

In 2011, Maharishi School was one of 24 schools that applied for and received government funding as a flagship free school. The school plans to open two branch schools in 2013 for 11- to 18-year-old students—in Woodbridge, Suffolk, and in the London borough of Richmond upon Thames.

A spokesman for the Department of Education comments that the Maharishi School was “outstanding in almost all categories” and that the school “has a strong record of high academic achievement”. The Ofsted report states that the school provides an “outstanding education” and its GCSE scores are in the country’s top 2.5 per cent. LEARN MORE
